Marine Grade Plywood Details

Our marine plywood sheets are built with a negligible core gap that reduces any likelihood of water getting trapped between the layers. This provides a strong and stable glue board for extra strength as it prevents expansion or rotting that could otherwise lower the integrity of the sheet.

Traditionally marine plywood sheets lend themselves for use in decorative projects in furniture such as an outdoor table, or in elements where moisture content may be of concern.

Marine ply has a smooth surface that’s ideal for staining and lacquering but can be equally as beautiful without any finishing applications to highlight the clean, blemish-free wood. However, as our marine plywood is specialised for moisture-intense environments it does not require finishing for protection against moisture.

All of our wood sheets can be cut, allowing for various designs and finishes. The thinner sheets of ply are easy to work with and can be cut, routed and assembled easily as they’re light and easy to manoeuvre.

We provide a range of plywood sheets in a wide variety of thicknesses - hardwood plywood is a good option for furniture building; birch plywood is the most budget-friendly; if you need a lightweight or flexible sheet, go with softwood plywood.

Key Features

Versatile

We construct our Marine plywood by glueing marine veneers with a negligible gap between each veneer, creating a hardwearing sheet that is also light and malleable. Comparably, this glued plywood sheet is a lighter and cheaper alternative to pure solid wood.

Malleable

Marine ply has a smooth surface that’s ideal for painting, staining, and lacquering, but can be equally stunning without any finishing applications to highlight the clean, blemish-free wood. When used without finishing, our marine plywood is still fully capable of protection against moisture.

Water-Resistant

Built with a negligible core gap, our marine plywood sheets reduce the likelihood of water getting trapped between the layers. This provides a strong and stable glue board for extra strength as it prevents expansion or rotting that could otherwise lower the integrity of the sheet.

Inexpensive

Compared to a solid piece of water-resistant wood of the same size, our marine plywood works out as an inexpensive solution yet delivers the same desired aesthetic and properties.

Customisable

All of our marine plywood sheets are perfectly easy to machine and cut, allowing us to customise your sheet to fit any requirements that you require.

Uses & Applications

Boat Building

One of the most common uses for marine plywood is building boats of all types including yachts, sailboats, powerboats, canoes, and kayaks. Its moisture resistance makes it an ideal material for hull construction. Marine plywood can be used to fabricate the deck, cabin, and other boat components. Its strength and impact resistance are valued in boatbuilding.

Docks and Piers

Marine plywood is the preferred choice when constructing docks, piers, boardwalks, and ramps over water. The sheet piling used for docks is often made from marine plywood. It can withstand repeated wetting and drying cycles as well as contact with water without degrading. Marine plywood has the longevity needed in dock applications.

Outdoor Structures

For any outdoor structures that require moisture resistance, marine plywood is the best choice. It can be used to build outdoor cabinets, wall panelling, wood decking, planter boxes, signs, and even outdoor furniture that will be exposed to the elements. Marine plywood is less prone to swelling, cracking and delaminating when used in outdoor projects.

Concrete Formwork

Concrete formwork built using marine plywood can withstand prolonged contact with concrete and the moisture from fresh concrete pour. The smooth face veneers of marine plywood make for attractive concrete finishes, and it resists deterioration better than regular plywood concrete forms.

Interiors

Inside campers, horse trailers, and motorhomes, marine plywood provides a durable surface that holds up to routine use in a damp environment. It is an ideal material for cabinetry, walls, and flooring in trailers designed for outdoor living. Marine plywood is lighter than most other water-resistant woods.

Frequently Asked Questions

What thickness of plywood do I need?

When deciding on the appropriate hardwood plywood thickness, consider the specific application to ensure optimal performance.

  • For intricate crafts and hobby projects, a thinner option, such as 4mm plywood, is well-suited.
  • If you're working on cabinet backs, a 6mm plywood sheet provides the necessary stability.
  • For furniture construction and shelving projects, opt for either 9mm or 12mm plywood, depending on the specific load-bearing requirements.
  • When durability is paramount, especially in applications like flooring, subfloors, or heavy-duty uses, it is advisable to select a sturdier option such as 18mm plywood.

Is marine plywood waterproof?

Marine plywood is not waterproof, however, it has a negligible core gap so that the likelihood of water getting trapped between the layers is minimised. This provides a strong and stable glue bond for extra strength.

How is marine plywood different from regular plywood?

Compared to standard plywood, marine plywood uses higher quality wood, more layers, has a more durable adhesive, and is designed to resist delaminating and warping when exposed to moisture over time. Regular plywood is not suitable for prolonged wet conditions.

What is the best way to seal marine plywood?

Since marine plywood is typically used around or in water, you’ll need to treat every surface of the wood with sealant. You can find a good waterproof penetrating epoxy to be ideal as it works deep into the wood, dries transparent, and requires less maintenance than other types of sealant.

Do you need marine-grade plywood?

We recommend marine-grade plywood around any instance where your sheet is going to be near water.

How long does marine plywood last?

When properly maintained, marine plywood can last over 25 years even with constant water exposure. Also, proper sealing and painting helps to extend its lifespan.

Is marine plywood treated with chemicals?

No, marine plywood is not chemically treated. It achieves its water resistance through the use of durable face and core veneers, resistant adhesives, and multiple laminated layers.

I needed a piece of wood to support my microwave. It was slightly bigger than the panel. Randomly came across this website and tried my luck. I am not a DIY person so I had to rely on them. I gave them no brief, just followed the simple form to submit measurements and selected the type of wood I like. Voila! In a few days, I received the perfect piece to ensure our microwave is well supported.

25mm marine ply, accurately cut to size, very good surface finish without any blemishes or damage, which was important as it was to be used as a door. Being able to rely on Cutmy to consistently supply ply with a high quality finish is the main reason that I will use them again.

so pleased with how our hallway is coming along 🥰 here is a little run down of what we’ve done 🎨 we painted the walls, skirting & door frames in slipper satin (paint matched at b&q) - I think I also want to do the ceilings as they need a refresh anyway 🪚 we panelled the wall longest wall which I loved doing, the most difficult part was going around the plug sockets - I ordered from cutmy.uk which was made to measure & absolutely brilliant 🎨 the panelling is painted in elephant’s breath (also paint matched at b&q) 🪞& then we added the mirrors 💡changed the light fitting 🖤 painted the little cabinet in pitch black - a bit risky but so pleased with how it came out 🪑added a bench and cushions 🌿 we bought a new (big) plant baby, bird of paradise & a large pot for the corner 🧥and some gorgey coat hooks for under the stairs made by ardovie_wood who we found on etsyuk We’re going to look for some baskets to go under the bench for shoes, and I want to get a new lamp too! And the current plan is the change the carpet to hard flooring next year. ➡️ swipe to the end to see the before photo • #Hallway #HallwayDecor #HallwayInspo #HouseUpdates #HomeDecor #HomeInterior #Panelling #GivingItAGo

LIFE LATELY 🌲✨ I realised I legit NEVER post stills anymore, and shiney reels don't always show reality. So next year I vouch to make a bigger effort to post more pictures that capture the good bad & ugly! 1. The finished stairs garland after 599 attempts at tying a bow we got there - if you saw my stories you'll know this is an achievement 🤣 2. A moment of still/ gratitude with my babies 3. 4 month milestone!! Feels like 4 minutes and 4 years all in one. 4. A small win to be celebrated - I was in overwhelm city and I forced myself out the house. Obvs felt a million times better for it so need to remember for next time! 5. My breakfast bar of dreams 🥰 so happy with how's it's turned out - just need to make my mind up on paint. 6. Nap trapped and savouring the moment. She won't be this little again and as tough as it is I would swap anything to keep these cuddles longer 🥹 Bit different from me today!! Happy Friday Homeys 🥰 CHS x
